Tanner Eagle Project

The whole month of July was devoted to getting Tanner's Eagle Project done.  He thought a lot about what he wanted to do that he was interested in.  Mr. Summer's (his band teacher) sent out an email to all of his band students saying that he had some Eagle project's that could be done in the classroom.  Tanner was very excited about this so we jumped on it.  His project was to stain around all of the band lockers.  It doesn't seem like a lot of work, but it was hours and hours of work.  We had to start by taking off the locker doors which took a lot of time.  Then sanding down the wood and retaining.  Then putting the doors back on.  Luckily we had a lot of help through this process including the young men helping sand, the young women helping to stain, and many hours with friends and family.  There were 35 people who helped with this project for a total of 154 hours.  Since it was summer, we had to coordinate hours with the school and Mr. Summers to have access to the band room.  The end results looked awesome.  Tanner was a great leader and realized a lot of things through this process.  After a month and a half, the project was finally finished and signed off with Mr. Summers.

Johnathan Camp Timberline July 22-27, 2014

We had a month full of camps.  I was starting to wonder when we would have our family all together again:).  Johnathan and Cameron Beck decided to attend Camp Timberline together.  They weren't in the same group, but were able to still see each other.  Cooper also was there as a leader.  They all had a great time.  I don't think Johnathan ate very much the whole week even though they lived off delicious food.  I was able to drop Johnathan and Cameron off in Pleasant View on Monday morning and Jeff and Emily brought them home Saturday morning.  Then on Sunday following the camp they had an awards night.  It was fun to see the boys that Johnathan grew close to during the week.  I am so grateful for great camps out there that allow my boys to go and grow as they are away.  Johnathan was tent buddies with Spencer and Tyler, but really got along with Spencer.  They were called the "Benchwarmers" team.  Their group song was, "We are the benchwarmers because we have a box.  Our bench is so warm it will knock off your socks."  Johnathan's favorite part of camp was going with his cousin and spending time during free time together.

Tanner 50 Miler Hike - July 15-20, 2013

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Preparing for a 50 miler backpacking trip starts way before they actually leave.  Byron is so great to spend a lot of time with each kid finding out what they want to eat.  Then we shop for the lightest foods that we can.  Tanner lived off of Ramon noodles and oatmeal.  Then at home Byron will weigh every item and make sure there isn't any way to make it lighter.  Tanner probably got tired of this part, but knew that he would be carrying this pack for a week so it needed to be as light as possible.  I actually think Byron loves doing this. What a great dad to spend so much time with the small details that make a huge difference.  He ended up with a backpack with about 35pounds of weight.

Then on June 15th Tanner met up at Brother Wilcox's house.  What amazing leaders and dads that sacrificed so much family time, days off and their health for this opportunity for the teachers.  Tanner was one of 8 teachers with 4 leaders and dads.  The Priests also went, but they didn't do much with them through the whole week.  Byron drove our van up to the drop off point.  He was able to see Tanner off.  We didn't hear from him and know how he was doing until he got home on Saturday around 3 p.m.  The 4th day was Tanner's favorite day where they were able to enjoy and not travel at all.  They were able to fish, play in the water and just relax with no walking.  Kobe, Preston, Zac and Karter were who Tanner hung out with the most.  He hiked the most with Preston and Kobe.  They hiked about 7-8 miles each day.  The second day was the worst for hiking.  There was a huge hill they had to go up.  He had an awesome time other than being extremely tired, dirty and sleep deprived.  Tanner was tent partners with Brett Roberts.  The last day Tanner put his wet shoes too close to the fire and the top and shoe laces burned on one.  He ended up still wearing them home.  Crazy boy! After the hike Brother Wilcox calculated that they did more like 65 miles total.

We got back from our reunion in Colorado on Saturday, July 13.  Johnathan stayed at Jeff and Emily's house until we could get home for a few hours.  It was great to see him after him being gone a week.  His poor lips are really chapped, but other than that he looked great and happy to see us.  He celebrated his birthday while at camp, so we opened presents from the family after getting home.  He got a nice bike helmet along with some of his favorite treats. We also fixed his brakes and flat tire so he could finally have a bike to ride again. Bradley was so excited to give Johnathan his card and $1 that he had inside it.  What a sweet brother!

 Camille got a lap desk for doing homework or anything while she is in bed.  She was really excited about that.  She also got some of her favorite snacks.  Bradley made a card for her also which he was super excited fro her to get. 

 

Johnathan and Camille had their family party on July 14th.  We had so many family come.  They are all so awesome to attend.  Melissa made them both cute prayer pillows.  Eric also gave Johnathan some candy covered in quarters.  He was really excited about this!

I took Camille and two of her friends, Emily Wirick and Cara Sabin, to Blue Lemon.  I loved seeing Camille interact with her friends.  We had a fun time together.  I am so glad Camille has such great friends surrounding her.

Johnathan Scout Camp July 8-13, 2013

Johnathan was gone over his birthday for this scout camp.  He was only going to attend for half of it due to our Beck Reunion falling the same week, but decided he wanted to stay and get merit badges.  Byron went up for the first two days.  He was able to get his kayaking merit badge.  The worst part was having to flip the kayak over and get out of the kayak.  He was in a tent with Tyler Atwood and Matthew Lemon.

Harold Beck Reunion

Uncle Ken and his family were in charge of the Harold Beck Reunion this year.  It was held on July 11-13.  Johnathan had his scout camp during that week, so he stayed back while we went without him.  We left early on July 11 to Colorado Springs.  We arrived at our camping area early afternoon.  We paid to stay in a cabin instead of bringing our tent.  The cabin fit us perfectly except for the strong smell of smoke that was in it.  We ended up switching cabins the second night so we could escape the smell.  We started out by going to an area where some of the family could go biking along the river.  Some extra bikes were brought by Uncle Ken's family so some of the older kids had a chance to ride.  Carter, Parker, Bradley and I went down by the river with Amanda, Carrie and some of the younger kids.  We even saw some people river rafting while we were by the water.  We then went to meet up with the bikers about 3 miles down the canyon.  Riley and Aidan Beck were tired so Carter and Parker were happy to ride their bikes the rest of the way.  The kids and Byron all had a fun time.  Unfortunately Derek got hurt when they were pretty close to the end of the ride.  Other than some pretty bad scrapes they all made it to the end.  That evening we played "Minute to Win It."  We all had fun playing these silly games together.

The next morning we got up and ate breakfast outside of our cabin.  Then we headed down to Glenwood Springs to enjoy the day there.  The water was so warm and what a fun day of swimming.  Right after lunch we got some rain, but not so much that we still couldn't enjoy swimming.  The pool is huge.  The older kids also enjoyed going off the diving boards and riding the slide once.

 After swimming we enjoyed some down time back at our camp area.  The boys played a game of "Sorry."  Carter (light blue) and Parker (navy blue).  We had fun playing some fun games at the campfire in the evening.

My birthday girl on the morning we left to come home.  She wasn't so excited to have her birthday while we drove home.  She got some yummy treats that morning including one of her favorite - nutella.  She was pretty excited.
